Website in A Week: What it is and How it Works
I’ve been launching one day websites for over five years. During the pre-work phase, I asked clients to write their website text and tell me about their business. Telling me about their business wasn’t too difficult, but writing website text was where the trouble started. Enter website in a week.
The Three P’s
I’ve found there are three major roadblocks clients experience that stop them from getting their sites launched: Positioning, Perfectionism and Procrastination.
Positioning: Figuring out how talk about what you do and who you do it for generates a lot of wheel spinning.
Perfectionism: Analysis paralysis. Too many options. Everything sucks. None of it’s good enough, especially when it comes to writing content.
Procrastination: There’s no time, overwhelm, you need to ‘prepare’. Huge website ‘mental load’. Deal with it later
You’ll never be ready for your close up
As I’ve written before, your website launch is not your wedding day. That’s not to say you shouldn’t put your best foot forward, but something about the nature of going public with a website is a psychological stumbling block for many people. Even people who are used to being in the public eye.
I’ve noticed a pattern lately in discovery calls. Clients say they ‘need to prepare’ before getting started on their new website projects.
This makes me think I need to fix my messaging.
Why? Because I’ve spent the last several years honing my process so that all my clients need to do is show up.
Designing websites and understanding the online marketing landscape is my day job. I can do it in my sleep. I do it all the time.
I’ve already prepared everything for you.
I know the questions you need to answer for your clients, where on the site you need to answer them and how.
I know the visual elements to consider (fonts, colors, images) and the best best places to get them. I know the extras you’ll need (legal policies, etc.) I know if you should put any effort into SEO or not.
I know all these things and more. I don’t say any of this to make myself seem like a puffed up expert. I say this to emphasize the fact that YOU don’t have worry about these things.
You don’t need to ‘prepare’. As I sometimes joke with my clients: “Just show up and do what I tell you to do.”
I’ve designed a process that only requires you to fill out a short intake form (less than an hour) and show up for three calls. Really.
You don’t need to look for photographs or write your website text, you need to start. I’m here to help you, to create a container and facilitate that process. To pull everything out of you, and turn it into a website.
This process doesn’t have to be hard.
There’s a reason the two most common words 90% of my clients use in my feedback form are ‘Proud’ and ‘Relieved’.
Is it really possible to build a quality website so fast?
Yes, it is, if you’re working with an experienced web designer like myself, who has a road-tested process.
I work with only one platform (Squarespace) which I know inside and out. My One Week Website offer also includes a very fixed scope (5 standard website pages, a starter visual brand including a word mark).
Here’s how it works:
-
I actually get a lot of information from this initial interview. I’m able to determine if this project type is right for you or not. If it is, I ask very specific questions which will yield information designed to serve as the foundation of your website design and copy.
-
I ask for hyper-specific, key information in the intake form that will help accelerate the process. It’s a drastically stripped down form from my website in a day offer. I’ve designed it so that it shouldn’t take more than an hour to complete.
-
A 90 minute recorded call where I review your intake form and lead you on a guided interview. The interview is designed to get the information I need to structure your site and write your website text.
-
Before this session I’ll send you a short loom video walkthrough of your new website. Once we’re on the call I’ll explain the design and content decisions I made and we can make any necessary revisions. We’ll set up your Squarespace account, connect your domain and launch. The call takes 1.5 - 2 hours.
-
You’ll have a day to live with your new website. You’ll be able to make any last minute revisions in this call. I’ll also show you how to make updates to your new site in the future. We’ll create a few custom tutorial videos for the tasks you’ll likely perform the most. The call takes 90 minutes.
-
I’ll provide 30 days of complimentary email support for any post-launch questions.
