5 Reasons A One Page Website is Absolutely Worth it For Your Business
You can get your business started on a platform like Instagram or LinkedIn, but at some point you’re going to need your own site, one that isn’t ‘rented’ on social media. A one page website is a fantastic way to start.
#1 A one page website is do-able. It allows you to bust through your website overwhelm and just get something launched.
Launching a website doesn’t have to be super complicated, but it does have many moving parts.
Writing website copy, finding images or hiring a photographer for a brand shoot take time, money and effort.
These pre-website building tasks can be overwhelming and expensive.
With a one page website, you only need to write a fraction of the copy you’d need for a full website. You can also easily launch with just a headshot and a few thoughtfully selected stock images.
There is still effort involved in getting everything ready for a one page website launch, but it is a gull order of magnitude less than launching a full site.
A word my clients regularly use after launching their websites is ‘relief’.
Not having a website, having an unfinished website, or a vague cloudy idea of all the things you need for a potential website floating around in your head wears on you.
Launching a one page site gets rid of that big ‘website mental load’
#2 As a business owner, a website will immediate transform you from an amateur into a pro
The simple fact of the matter is having a website confers credibility.
Sending potential clients to an Instagram account or a LinkedIn profile page communicates that your business is still in the hobby or experimentation stage.
This doesn’t inspire confidence in potential customers.
It looks like you haven’t taken the time or invested any money in your business.
If you don’t take your business seriously, why should a potential client?
The marketers that came up with Squarespace’s tagline ‘A Website Makes it Real’ knew what they were doing.
#3 A website, even a one page site will make you feel more confident about your business
Launching a website is an emotional process. Sure, a website, is just a website, but it’s also not ‘just a website’.
If you’re a solo business owner, your website is ‘you’.
It’s the face of your business you show to the world. And your business outside needs to match your business inside.
Launching a website can trigger a lot of psychological resistance, especially perfectionism. You’ll need to push through a lot of this emotional baggage in the process of getting your site live.
But once you work through all that internal noise and actually launch, there’s a kind of magic alchemy that takes place. A transformation.
You’ll feel a new sense of legitimacy and pride in your business. This will come across when you interact with potential clients, colleagues and partners.
#4 A one page website is a great starting point from which to build out a full website
If your business is relatively new and you’re still experimenting with your offers, services and messaging, the last thing you want to do is design and build a huge expensive website.
You may pivot or change your model and then you’d need to revisit the entire site.
True, this happens regularly even in more established businesses and a website redesign will probably be required at some point.
But when you’re just starting out, your business model and messaging is more dynamic.
You’re probably getting a handle on what kind of customer you want to work with and nailing down your offers.
You can expand a one page website relatively easily.
In Squarespace you can easily add additional pages or a blog to your website. When you have a basic email strategy figured out you can sign up for Squarespace’s email newsletter tool and a sign up form to your site.
You can make all of these expansions and improvements to your site when you’re ready. You don’t have to do it in one big, overwhelming push with a full website design.
#5 A one page website is good for SEO
A lot of people will say that one page websites aren’t good for SEO. That’s not entirely wrong.
But you know what’s also not good for SEO? No website.
It’s true that without a blog or a more content rich website, you won’t come up in a lot of Google searches.
However, there are two big SEO benefits to launching a one page site now:
#1 Domain age
One factor the Google algorithm takes into account is your domain age, in other words how long your website has been around.
The sooner you get your website out into the world and it get it on Google’s radar, the better it is for your long-term SEO efforts.
#2 You will rank for your name
This is only helpful if your business uses your name.
If you have accounts like LinkedIn or Instagram or you’ve guest posted on established blogs or been on podcasts, it’s likely when people Google your name those things will show up first in the search result.
If you launch a website with your name as the domain (www.yourname.com) or in the site title, eventually your website will come up first.
Here are five things you can do after your website launch that will speed this process along.
