Launch In A Day: The Backstory

Over the last couple of months, I’ve had the time to review and take stock of all the projects I’ve done in the last year. What worked? What didn’t?

Something I noticed: Projects that dragged on too long lost a lot of momentum.

You may have heard of Parkinsons Law: Work expands to the time allotted. In other words, if someone gives you a month to do something, you’ll do it in a month. If someone gives you the same amount of work to do in a week, you’ll somehow get it done in a week.

I saw this in action last month. I was working on this site with an old friend and fellow California expat living in Germany. We started it in February, then all hell broke loose, then we picked it up again in fits and starts through the summer.

Miles, my old friend and client for the project, is also a full time teacher at an international school. As summer came to a close he had to return to the classroom with all of the masks and shifts and craziness that entailed, and I had to shut down for full time mommy duty.

“Miles, we have to just get this thing done or it won’t get finished until October if at all” I wrote in a message. He agreed. We decided to spend almost the entirety of one day working on the site.

We got more done in six hours than we did over the course of several months. We had a video chat going the whole time and we would jump on and off as we both worked on our individual tasks.

I was able to get immediate feedback and make changes without the back and forth that would normally take days. If Miles got stuck on something like redirecting an old website URL, he could share his screen with me and I could walk him through it.

It was intense. It was efficient. It was effective and it was exhilarating.

For both of us. We were proud and amazed by how quickly we knocked each task off the list.

There was one last glitch with hooking up the MailChimp account. We had to go back to the ‘old way’ of doing things, so that 10 minute task took about another week and a half to finish. But finish it we did and the site is now live! Take a look, and if you’re in Berlin, sign up for a workshop.

This experience got me thinking about doing day long ‘Intensives’. I’ve seen some other web service providers offer this service and now I see why.

In a nutshell: You book me for a day. There is a pre-work phase where you get all of your inputs together (with online guidance from me). We have a call prior to our day together to make sure everything is ready. Then, in the course of one day we finalize a word mark (typography based logo) and launch a basic 3-5 page website.

Read more about it here.

If you want to have a website ready by Christmas or for 2021, need guidance on what to put on it and enjoy working fast, then this offer is for you.
