Sneak Peek: Website In One Day Pre-Work
My signature website design package Launch In A Day, where I design a website in one day, of course does not ‘only’ take one day.
You’ll need to pull together your website content (I provide helpful resources for this) and provide me with guidance about your business objectives and brand.
I thought it might be helpful to create a quick video that walks you through the process, or at least the pre-work part of the process.
This is a look at what happens after you’ve booked a call and you’re going forward with your Launch In A Day website .
What this video shows is every step in the pre-launch workflow I’ve designed that ensures you’re set up for success before we have our day together.
What’s really important to understand here: This workflow relieves you from having to figure out everything yourself.
Just follow the steps I lay out, and you’ll be ready to go.
Step 1: Defining your website objectives
Basically, over 10 days you’re going to get five emails with links to these forms. The first of which is defining your project objectives and requirements.
Here I ask you why you’re doing this project. What are your business struggles? What is going to be the ultimate objective of this website.?
Then I prompt you to think about into requirements (features) and all the things you might possibly want on a website like appointment booking and a blog and social media feeds, etc, etc.
Important: I ask you about all these features, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to do them on the day. That’s something we’ll clarify in our kick-off call.
Probably you can do one of these things. Like multiple languages. That is not something that can happen in a one day website package, but I need to know these things because it helps me think about how I need to set up your site.
Step 2: Creating your website text
The next step is creating your website text.
I give you a typical outline, writing prompts and a links to resources like a short series by Donald Miller, author Building A Story Brand. This will really help you get in the right frame of mind for writing website text that resonates with your ideal customer.
I also provide you links to posts that explain what kind of text should go on each page of your website.
Total honesty: This is usually the most difficult step!
It’s important that you’re text is kept here (you can also link to a Google doc, if that' helps). When I work on your website on your scheduled day, I need to have everything in one place.
I work really, really fast and very efficiently. My Squarespace web design packages work as a result of the process I’ve designed. Everything I need is in one place.
I give you some guidance on Google and SEO. This is helpful, but I find for most clients this is something that they’re more ready to tackle after the site is launched.
I also have a link to services that will help you set up the correct legal text for your site.
Step 4: Articulating your brand attributes
The next pre-work assignment is thinking about your brand.
I ask you to talk about your ideal customer, your ideal client, what kind of feelings you want the website to evoke.
Defining your brand in even just a few words, it helps me with the design process. It should be a relatively quick exercise.
Step 5: Defining your visual style
The next step in the one day website process, is what I call defining your visual style.
I have you create a mood board. This exercise is putting together a series of images that resonate with you and help you clarify and communicate the vibe you want for your website. I include a tutorial video showing you how to make one.
The images on your mood board can be from anywhere.
You can use imagery of interiors, architecture, typography, fashion, it can be other websites - not just your own industry. This helps me get a feel for your style.
I also provide links to good stock photography that is either affordable or free.
Finally, I have you send me one to three websites you like. Again, these do not have to be in your industry. It just helps me understand visually what you’re trying to do.
Step 6: Housekeeping and existing photo upload
This it the final step. It’s administrative and quick
If you have preexisting photography, or you’ve had a brand shoot, or even just a headshot, I give you a place where you can share it with me.
Again, I need to have all these things in one place so I can get to it fast, rather than go through a lot of back and forth or dig through emails.
The shortest amount of time to get through this workflow is around two weeks, but I think three weeks is generally the sweet spot.
I tell people it realistically takes about 10 to 20 hours to get all of this done. Of course, it will depend on your individual situation.
